Data Engineer - Team Data Foundation
Mission: Process massive IoT data volumes reliably and fast.
We're looking for a skilled Data Engineer to join our Data Foundation team at Trackunit. Our team builds and operates IrisX Analytics - a customer-facing data platform powered by Databricks that gives construction companies direct access to their fleet and equipment data. Every second, telemetry streams in from millions of devices worldwide, and the volumes are only growing.
The challenge ahead is exciting: we need to scale IrisX Analytics to serve many more customers, keep data latency low as volumes grow, and enable AI-driven insights on top of some of the largest telematics datasets in the industry. We work closely with Databricks to push the boundaries of what the platform can do - both for our internal data lake and for our customers.
You'll be attached to one of our hubs in Aarhus, Aalborg, Copenhagen, or Kolding. We work remote-first, but the data team is mainly in Aarhus and Aalborg - so expect to join us there from time to time.
If you're excited about building a data platform that turns massive real-time IoT streams into something customers can act on, this is your chance to build something meaningful in one of the world's most essential industries!
What's in it for you?
A place in an agile growth SaaS business, with possibilities to grow internally in the company. We are moving quickly, so fasten your seat belt and prepare to adjust. Back in 2020 we were 150 employees at Trackunit and we have just passed 450 employees.
International environment with regular check-ins and social events across teams, departments and borders.
We take your personal and professional development goals seriously and we support them through training, coaching and mindfulness as well as with an open feedback culture to enable you to identify your strengths and opportunities. We do this by touching upon your impact on our triple focus: impacting yourself, impacting teams/relations and impacting the organisation/strategy.
Flexibility and hybrid working is not just a cliché to us or something we state in a job posting. We do offer you a flexible setup and believe that you best can structure how your routines look like. And once you have chosen how you work best, let us know what you need: we got you covered with the IT equipment you need for your work.
Turning the Tide. At Trackunit, we aim to create and contribute to an inclusive workplace. And this priority starts with our hiring - we do not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, personal expression, ethnicity, religious belief, or disability status. We only assess candidates on their qualifications and merit. Learn more about TIDE and other DE&I initiatives here.
Who are you ideally?
You think of data not just as pipelines, but as a product. You care about who consumes the data - whether it's a customer running queries in their workspace or an internal team building on top of your platform - and you design with their experience in mind.
You bring a strong background in data engineering and are proficient in Python, SQL, and Spark. From streaming ingestion to historical backfills, from performance tuning to choosing the right partitioning strategy - these are the kinds of challenges that motivate you.
You have hands-on experience with Databricks and Delta Lake, or similar lakehouse technologies.
You understand the medallion architecture (bronze/silver/gold) and know how to model data for different consumption patterns.
You're curious about how AI and large language models can be enabled on top of large-scale data - and you're excited to help build the foundation that makes that possible.
Experience with Kafka, multi-tenant data architectures, or IoT/telematics data is a strong plus.
Don't meet every single requirement? No worries - this is what we're looking for ideally, but if you're particularly drawn to this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply.
Primary responsibilities:
Shape the future of IrisX Analytics as a data product - you will have a direct impact on what our customers experience and the value they get from their data.
Design, build, and run scalable data pipelines (streaming and batch) that process large volumes of IoT telematics data. You build it, you run it - and you take pride in both the quality and the reliability of what you ship.
Take responsibility for our internal data lake and long-term data preservation - keeping the platform secure, governance automated, and data trustworthy at scale.
Tackle large-scale data challenges: optimizing pipeline performance, tuning Spark jobs, and handling deduplication and late-arriving data.
Own the operational health of the platform. We use modern observability and incident tooling (Axiom, Grafana, Prometheus, FireHydrant, Slack alerting) and we expect to know about problems before our customers do.
Engage across teams - from SRE on the platform side, to professional services and customer-facing teams - to ensure the data platform delivers end-to-end.
Our hiring process
Don't waste your time on writing the best possible cover letter for the job. We want you to create an impact that matters, and that's not in the cover letter.
Initial phone conversation with a colleague from our P&T team.
Interview with your potential new leader and relevant people from the team, so you'll get to know them and the team better.
Assignment-specific interview. We want you to get an insight into some of the concrete work tasks or projects related to the role. You will be given a case to prepare prior to the interview, and at the interview, you will present the case to relevant colleagues from across Trackunit, who you'll also work closely with in the job.
If needed, throughout the process we will obtain references from former employers and do background checks for level specific, if you have not provided these yourself.
Offer presentation and walk-through. We're lucky to have you!
